Tour Details

East Bosnia regions, bordering western Montenegro with its pearl of Sutjeska National Park, or as people call it “The Yosemite of the Balkans” are ideal destinations for any true nature lover, either seeking adrenaline or just easy and relaxed explorations.

Sutjeska National Park is the best untouched nature can offer. Just by saying it is home to a Bosnian highest mountain peak of Maglić (2386m), and heart-shaped glacier Trnovačko lake, with addition to European last rainforest of Perućica, and amazing canyon of river Tara, we believe it is more than enough to give this region at least day of your time – time fully enriched with stunning nature experiences which will last for a lifetime.

For those reasons we have developed full day itinerary which is great for anyone of medium to high fitness level, and delivers the best of Sutjeska National Park in one day.

What to Expect

This tour will begin with transfer from Sarajevo to Tjentište, via Eastern Bosnia regions.

STOP 1: Tjentište
As soon as we depart from Sarajevo ride will take us toward eastern, beautiful and very mountainous parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, towards regions of Foča and Tjentište. After roughly 2 hours ride we shall arrive to Tjentište which is our first entrance point to the National Park Sutjeska.
Tjentište is famous WW2 Sutjeska Battle memorial, very meaningful for the general story of Yugoslavia, which is surely unmissable topic to anyone travelling Balkans, and the topic we’ll be discussing a lot during this two days program. The last 45 min of the ride will take us up the gravel road (cca 17 km) through the heart of Sutjeska’s National Park untouched nature regions, where we will reach start point of our hiking trail, spot called Prijevor at 1668 m.a.s.l. From there we shall have stunning views over the three mountains of Maglić, Zelengora and Volujak.
On the way to Prijevor, we will make short stop at one of the amazing viewpoints to observe Skakavac waterfall at Perućica primeval forrest (one of the last ones preserved in Europe).

STOP 2: Trnovačko Lake

At Prijevor, we shall leave our transportation and start 2.30 hour medium hike, which will take us through very beautiful regions of the national park and its amazing nature, where finally around lunch time.

Trnovačko lake is nested underneath the mountain Maglić which is Bosnian highest mountain peak, bordering Bosnia and Montenegro. Trnovačko lake is actually located in Montenegro, but is only accessible as a hiking trail from Bosnian side, through Sutjeska National Park.

Once at the lake, you will be given free time to explore the lake, while your guides will take time to prepare lunch. During the hot summer months lake is perfect for swimming too.

After the delicious lunch and free time on your own to explore the region, we shall start our hike back. Again after some three hours we shall arrive to Prijevor, and then will take ride back to Tjentište.

STOP 3: Tjentište WW2 Memorial

The last stop before return to Sarajevo would be “Battle of Sutjeska” WW2 memorial at Tjentište. It commemorates the fighters and fallen soldiers of the Battle of the Sutjeska, which took place from May 15th to June 16th, 1943.

We shall learn some glorious WW2 stories and admire to Tito’s partisans efforts to keep these regions of Yugoslavia and Bosnia free from Nazi-Ustase-Chetniks occupation.

Return to Sarajevo should be around 8.30 pm.

Lukomir and Sutjeska tour
I had the pleasure of heading out on two tours with Saudin from Funky Tours. Two individual day hikes to explore Bosnian nature and points of interest.
The tours both in their own right were interesting and challenging. Being able to hike through areas that without a car and guide are challenging.
Would highly recommend both the lukomkir village and Sutjeska/Piva tours.
Thanks again!!!

Fantastic day hike in Sutjeska National Park
I generally prefer to hike alone, but going with Sarajevo Funky Tours was a wonderful experience. From start to finish, everything was perfect. My family would not have enjoyed our day nearly as much if we had tried to do it on our own.

Our guide Saudin is both a very experienced hiker and climber and has studied biology at university. He is also an environmentalist. His expertise and very affable manner made the day a most memorable one. My family and I also had the pleasure of another guide who accompanied us, Ejub, who also provided invaluable insights into the complicated history of his incredibly fascinating country.

The hike itself is not difficult for those who like to hike, but it is a 4-5 hour journey with just a little bit of climbing. The views were spectacular along the entire way, and lunch at the Trnvacko lake was wonderful. We even got a special, unexpected treat from the local man who rides his horse everyday to tend to the lake! What makes this hike so special is that you are trekking in a truly astounding natural habitat with so few tourists. Having hiked in several other countries where you feel like you’re in a parade, this was something truly special!

Sarajevo Funky Tours was really good about communicating with us regarding every detail of the trip from the moment I reached out to them. I wholeheartedly recommend taking a trip with them if you want to learn about and enjoy Bosnia and Herzegovina in a way that is not likely possible on your own.

Sutjeska National Park hiking trip
I had a really great day trip to the national park with Sarajevo Funky Tours. Our guide was Saudin, who was friendly, knowledgeable, compassionate, and patient (the latter two of which are great assets on a trip like this with people who aren’t necessarily experienced hikers). He never made us feel rushed and was happy to take a break any time anyone needed it. The park itself is, of course, absolutely stunning and well worth a trip if you have any interest in nature or beautiful scenery at all; in fact, you can even see a lot of great views without doing any hiking at all. I also appreciated being picked up and dropped off at home rather than having to walk home after a long day of hiking.

As I don’t hike that often, I contacted the agency before booking to try to find out how difficult this hike actually was. They mentioned the 150 metre difference in elevation between the starting point and ending point, but didn’t mention that you actually have to descend about 300 metres first, then ascend 150 metres, then do that in reverse on the way back. As well, the trails are good in places but sometimes quite rough with lots of small, loose rocks. I didn’t feel that this was really reflected in the advice I got before booking. They do mention in the tour description that you need to be in decent shape, but it can be hard to tell what is meant by that. Anyway, I successfully completed the trip, but it would have been nice to have some more accurate information in advance. The tour description on the website also mentions visiting a monument in Tjentiste, which we didn’t see.

The other issue when booking is that I booked about a week and a half in advance, but didn’t get any confirmation for a week. When I finally emailed to ask, they said they hadn’t got my booking. It was all sorted out easily after that as they were very responsive to email and let me join on the day I wanted to anyway, but it would have been nice if the website booking had worked correctly and I had at least got a reply rather than hearing nothing at all and having to follow up myself.

In summary, although the administrative side of the trip could have been handled better, I do absolutely recommend the trip for anyone who can handle it and I have nothing but praise for our guide and for the national park.

The Sutjeska National Park Tour

We absolutely loved our tour in Sutjeska National Park. We booked the tour at late notice but Ema was very obliging and replied promptly to all emails.

The tour is a full day with a long drive from Sarajevo. However the scenery during the drive is beautiful and it was great talking to our guide, Saudin, about the National Park and the research he does there. We stopped off along route to admire some particularly stunning views.

The hike to lake Trnovačko was very enjoyable with great views of the mountains and forest. I only had trainers available for the walk and they were fine although proper walking shoes would be preferable. The lake is incredible and the perfect place to stop for some lunch. We could have stayed there all day enjoying the view!

Our guide Saudin was a fantastic host and very knowledgable about the park. We learnt lots about the flora and fauna, particularly the reptiles there. We also learnt about the historical importance of the area. The whole day was great fun but also educational thanks to Saudin’s enthusiasm and expertise.

We had a great day and would recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys a walk in beautiful scenery!
